The interruption in the auto-update process has been attributed to a PHP error encountered when the system attempts to check for newer versions. According to security firm WordFence, this error can halt the update process, leaving websites unprotected if administrators do not act promptly.
Dion Hulse, a lead developer for WordPress, provided insight into the issue. He explained that a miscalculation during an effort to minimize API calls resulted in an oversight that caused a fatal error upon the deployment of the last update. Remarkably, this fatal flaw was not discovered until hours after the release of version 4.9.3, signifying a lapse in quality control during the update cycle.
With this vulnerability now resolved in the 4.9.4 version, administrators are strongly encouraged to manually initiate the update. To do so, users can navigate to the WordPress Dashboard, select “Updates,” and click on “Update Now.” Verification of the installed version confirms the update, ensuring that their site is shielded from vulnerabilities.
Complicating matters, while WordPress has released this new version, recent feedback suggests that not all users have experienced the manual update issue. Some have reported that their websites automatically updated to include both versions 4.9.3 and 4.9.4 without intervention.
Adding to the urgency, WordPress unveiled two additional maintenance updates this week that, notably, do not address a critical application-level Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerability made public last week. This serious security gap permits attackers to potentially incapacitate numerous WordPress sites with a single system, further heightening the need for vigilant software maintenance.
