Insights on the Expanding Threat Landscape from AWS and Deloitte
The increasing geopolitical tensions have created a more perilous threat landscape for businesses, particularly those reliant on IoT and operational technology. As cloud infrastructures become more interconnected, their exposure to vulnerabilities escalates.
In a recent interview, PJ Hamlen, the worldwide leader of the global partner security initiative at Amazon Web Services, emphasized that companies are under immense pressure to innovate through software advancements, inadvertently expanding their attack surfaces. “Without a clear strategy, organizations may find themselves in a state of disarray, pursuing initiatives without understanding the targeted outcomes,” he remarked.
Julie Bernard, a principal in cyber and strategic risk at Deloitte & Touche, noted that despite the growing unease in the cybersecurity landscape, the existing tensions between threat actors and business growth can be viewed as a double-edged sword. “There exists a healthy tension that can foster innovation in response to threats,” she stated.
The pair also explored critical issues in their discussion, including the rise of IoT-based attacks and the necessity for robust cyber hygiene practices. They highlighted collaborative efforts between Deloitte and AWS to develop services that enhance security frameworks in the business sector.
Hamlen, who joined AWS in 2022 with over two decades of industry experience, aims to leverage AWS’s innovation to create security solutions that bolster cyber resilience across organizations. Meanwhile, Bernard brings over 30 years of expertise in cyber risk management and strategic IT governance, playing a pivotal role in navigating complex risk environments.
Understanding the tactics outlined in the MITRE ATT&CK framework, businesses must identify potential techniques such as initial access, privilege escalation, and lateral movement that could be exploited in recent attacks. As they strive to fortify their defenses, ongoing vigilance and proactive strategies remain essential in this evolving threat landscape.
