Opswat has acquired a cybersecurity startup based in the Washington D.C. area, aiming to enhance risk management and operational efficiency within critical infrastructure sectors. This strategic acquisition of Fend is expected to broaden security accessibility and adaptability in challenging environments, such as water treatment facilities, oil rigs, and electrical grids, according to Benny Czarny, CEO of Opswat. Fend’s technology includes data diodes, which facilitate unidirectional data flow to guarantee elevated security levels, aligning with global regulatory mandates for critical infrastructure protection.

Czarny articulated that while firewalls play a crucial role in cybersecurity, they do have inherent limitations. He noted, “When it comes to safeguarding critical infrastructure, there must be solutions that transcend traditional firewall capabilities. Fend’s diode is that solution—an unhackable physical device through which security can be assured.”

Data diodes are regarded as a superior alternative to traditional firewalls due to their ability to mitigate risks associated with misconfigurations and vulnerabilities during exploitation attempts in intricate network environments. Such vulnerabilities could seemingly carry catastrophic outcomes in critical industries, particularly in facilities like nuclear power plants or vital water supply systems. Dunn acknowledged that Fend’s limited scale restricted its capacity to fulfill customer requirements for additional functionalities, such as content sanitation and high-volume data throughput. Looking towards future integration, Dunn stated that Fend’s hardware is built with interoperability in mind. Ongoing technical collaboration focuses on seamlessly integrating Fend’s diodes with Opswat’s MetaDefender platform, enhancing capabilities for comprehensive data scanning and threat detection. The long-range aim is to develop an all-encompassing solution that provides layered protection, stretching from sensor networks to enterprise systems.

Czarny remarked, “We have nearly 2,000 customers, many of whom are eager to deploy diodes and universal gateways across diverse remote sites, including energy sources and waterworks.” The integration of OPSWAT’s MetaDefender technology to augment Fend’s existing capabilities will usher in advanced features such as multi-scanning and data loss prevention, further protecting operational infrastructures from growing cybersecurity threats.
