Exabeam, a security operations vendor based in Silicon Valley, has appointed Pete Harteveld as CEO, tasking him with tackling risks posed by AI and implementing AI agents to bolster security operations. Harteveld, who joined the company in April 2024, will replace Christopher O’Malley, who steered Exabeam since February 2022. Harteveld previously oversaw the integration of LogRhythm and Exabeam, and his new role signifies a shift towards leveraging AI to navigate emerging threats effectively. “Chris’s vision laid the groundwork for our current position, and now it’s time to drive further growth,” Harteveld remarked in an interview with Information Security Media Group.
Assuming the CEO role allows Harteveld to delve deeper into technical and operational facets such as product development. He noted that his previous position as Chief Revenue Officer provided him with valuable insights into both the internal workings of Exabeam and the external customer landscape.
“I consider this an evolution rather than a major leap, as I will continue to collaborate closely with our executive team, including leaders such as Steve Wilson, who oversees product management,” he added. This teamwork aims to enhance the prominence of their respective roles within the organization.
Moreover, Exabeam has begun embedding AI agents into its internal workflows to gain a thorough understanding of the technology’s behavior. Collaborating with their Chief Information Security Officer, Exabeam monitors the real-time usage of AI internally, using this information to inform their external product strategies.
“By managing and overseeing our AI agents, we can gain crucial insights into their behavior and address the challenges they present,” Harteveld stated. This proactive approach allows SOC teams to detect potential threats more efficiently, treating the proliferation of AI as akin to traditional insider threats – thus ensuring early identification and response capabilities.
