Startup Mira Security to Provide Insights on Encrypted Network Traffic and Decryption

Darktrace has acquired Mira Security, a startup specializing in network traffic visibility, to enhance insights on encrypted network traffic for enterprises in regulated sectors. The takeover aims to bolster services for industries with stringent compliance requirements.
The acquisition, announced by the Cambridge, UK-based cybersecurity AI leader, positions Mira’s capabilities to provide organizations with rich visibility across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. This integration is vital, particularly for heavily regulated industries such as finance, government, and critical infrastructure.
Phil Pearson, Chief Strategy Officer at Darktrace, emphasized that the merger would accelerate innovation within the company’s network product offerings, enhancing security performance for clients. The details of the acquisition deal have not been publicly disclosed.
Mira Security, established in 2020 and led by Niel Viljoen, has a compact team of 20 employees and has not revealed any external funding to date. The organization has been recognized for its expertise in developing high-performance software and firmware solutions for advancing network capabilities.
Both companies had recently announced a partnership to aid organizations in decrypting and analyzing network traffic more effectively, illustrating their commitment to reducing blind spots and enhancing detection capabilities. This integrated approach allows for detailed examinations of encrypted data, which is essential as organizations trade off network performance for security.
As traditional perimeters weaken and cyber threats evolve, the collaborative efforts of Mira Security and Darktrace will address complex security challenges. The acquisition enhances the development of network research capacity, with a promise to manage encrypted data without degrading overall network functionality.
The acquisition is particularly timely, occurring shortly after Darktrace’s purchase of Cado Security, a London-based startup focused on cloud forensics. This series of strategic acquisitions not only accelerates Darktrace’s growth in the cybersecurity sector but also showcases its commitment to developing solutions that counteract evolving threats. Darktrace was privatized by Thoma Bravo in 2024, marking a significant shift in its operational strategy aimed at long-term dominance in the cybersecurity landscape.
