Aussie Data Breaches Reach Record High in 2024

Australian Data Breaches Set New Record in 2024

The Australian Privacy Commissioner urges both government and businesses to enhance personal data protection measures.

The number of reported data breaches in Australia reached an unprecedented level in 2024, with the Office of the Australian Privacy Commissioner (OAIC) noting a 25 percent increase over the previous year. Notifications surged from 893 incidents in 2023 to 1,113 in 2024, prompting Australian Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind to stress the urgent need for improved safeguarding of citizens’ personal information.

“In light of these alarming figures, it is clear that more must be done to shield the personal data of Australians,” Kind remarked.

“The trends currently observed suggest that the threat landscape for data breaches, driven by malicious actors, is unlikely to diminish, posing escalating risks to Australians,” Kind stated.

Kind further emphasized the necessity for businesses and governmental bodies to enhance their privacy and security measures in light of these challenges. “Australians place their trust in organizations to manage their personal information responsibly and securely,” she added.

During the latter half of the year, 69 percent of reported breaches were attributed to malicious acts and criminal activity, with 61 percent categorized as cybersecurity incidents. The Australian government and healthcare sectors were particularly affected, constituting 17 and 20 percent of all reported breaches, respectively.

Kind noted that many Australians have limited options but to share their personal information with government agencies, accentuating the critical need for stronger data protection measures in the public sector. “It is crucial that these agencies not only secure personal information but also have an effective response plan in the event of a breach,” she stated.

“Time is a vital factor in managing data breaches, as the potential for significant harm rises with time. Swift notification equips individuals to take necessary precautions to protect themselves,” Kind concluded.
