Analysts Caution Pentagon’s Conflict with Anthropic May Have Significant Defense Implications

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has set a high-stakes deadline for Anthropic to extend access to its Claude artificial intelligence model, a move experts caution could create serious cybersecurity vulnerabilities and disrupt the supply chain within the defense sector. Analysts from Information Security Media Group highlighted that this ultimatum may overlook the complexities inherent in the operational and technical challenges faced by both the Pentagon and Anthropic.

According to reports, Hegseth warned that Anthropic may be regarded as a “supply chain risk” if it does not adjust its model’s access and security features to meet military specifications.
Experts underscore that compressing such a multifaceted issue into a matter of days ignores the necessity for thorough deliberation and could precipitate long-lasting detrimental effects on the defense industrial base, particularly at a time when advancements in artificial intelligence are essential for keeping pace with foreign adversaries. Kevin Greene, a former program manager in the Department of Homeland Security, described the ultimatum as “unrealistic” and noted that designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk could plunge the Pentagon into unfamiliar territory.
Greene warned that if the Pentagon withdraws support from Anthropic, this could result in a capability gap of six months to a year, as it waits for other companies to achieve comparable integration and mission capabilities. He further stated that labeling Anthropic as a supply chain risk may restrict the department’s options for viable alternatives, not just at the Pentagon, but in areas where the Claude model contributes to mission effectiveness.
The root of the contention lies in concerns surrounding the potential use of the AI technology for “mass surveillance.” Anthropic reportedly intends to impose limitations on specific surveillance and military applications, while Defense Department officials seek broader permissions encompassing intelligence and cyber operations. Analysts propose that a possible resolution may involve establishing legal frameworks ensuring that Anthropic’s models are not employed for unauthorized surveillance or monitoring of U.S. citizens.

The potential invocation of the Defense Production Act by Hegseth introduces yet another dimension to the ongoing negotiations. Caen emphasized that a more sustainable approach would involve developing model-agnostic infrastructures, allowing agencies to deploy both open-source and proprietary models securely within their designated environments.
