Experts like Matt Green, a cryptographer from Johns Hopkins, warn that any end-to-end encrypted system that incorporates off-device AI processing introduces inherent risks. While WhatsApp claims to have designed their system for maximum security, including assurances of unreadable user texts, the reality remains that increased data offloading heightens exposure to hacking threats and potential adversarial exploitation.
Furthermore, WhatsApp anticipates that Private Processing will serve as a base for more complex AI features in the future, which may involve processing and storing additional data. Green cautions that this could render the systems even more attractive to threat actors, given the sensitive nature of communications often handled by secure messaging services.
