Meta Enhances Age-Verification Tools to Curb Underage Access
Meta has significantly upgraded its age-verification processes by implementing an AI-driven system that analyzes images and videos on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This initiative aims to identify and remove accounts belonging to users under the age of 13 by assessing “visual cues” such as height and bone structure. The announcement comes in response to mounting concerns about children evading existing access restrictions, often through rudimentary tactics, such as altering their appearance in photos.
This new age-verification method is part of a broader AI-centric security strategy designed to address the shortcomings of traditional age verification, which primarily relies on self-reported age data. Meta’s objective is to create barriers that minimize the ease with which underage users can access platforms intended for older audiences.
In a recent press release, Meta detailed its commitment to deploying tools that identify contextual indicators for estimating users’ ages. This involves analyzing various elements within user-generated content, such as posts, comments, bios, and descriptions, with a specific focus on mentions of educational milestones and celebrations, which can signal a user’s age more accurately.
Furthermore, the company has integrated automated analytical techniques capable of identifying physical traits from shared imagery. Importantly, Meta clarifies that this system does not employ facial recognition technology; it does not seek to pinpoint individual identities. Instead, Meta combines visual insights with textual analysis and interaction patterns to enhance the detection and removal of underage accounts.
If suspicions arise that an account belongs to a child under 13, Meta will suspend the account until the user can verify their age through the company’s established protocols. Failure to do so will result in permanent deletion of the account.
In addition, Meta plans to extend its verification technology to users between the ages of 13 and 15, automatically assigning them to teen accounts upon detection. These accounts will come with built-in content restrictions and parental controls, designed to provide a more secure online experience for younger users.
The rollout of this age-verification technology commenced in 2024, targeting Instagram users in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. It is now set to expand to Brazilian accounts and 27 countries within the European Union. Notably, for the first time, Facebook users in the U.S. will also be subject to these practices, with future expansions to the EU and UK on the horizon.
These measures are widely interpreted as Meta’s response to a recent preliminary ruling by the European Commission, which indicated potential breaches of the Digital Services Act. The Commission’s findings suggested that Meta’s existing mechanisms for preventing children under 13 from accessing its services were inadequately enforced.
Supporting these regulatory concerns, a survey by the nonprofit organization Internet Matters revealed that around a third of children successfully bypassed age restrictions on social networking sites. The report indicated that a significant number of youths—46% of those aged between 9 and 16—believe that evading age verification measures is quite simple, despite only 32% admitting to having done so.
