Allan Liska, a ransomware analyst at Recorded Future, notes that while some groups are indeed harnessing AI to improve ransomware and malware capabilities, the majority have not yet integrated these technologies. He points out that AI is being more frequently utilized for facilitating initial access into target networks, enhancing the efficiency of cyberattacks.
In a separate development, researchers at the cybersecurity firm ESET revealed they have identified what they claim to be the first known AI-driven ransomware, named PromptLock. This malware operates primarily on local machines and leverages an open-source AI model from OpenAI to dynamically generate harmful Lua scripts that can inspect intended files, exfiltrate sensitive data, and initiate encryption. Although ESET classifies this code as a proof-of-concept that has not yet been deployed against any victims, it underscores the increasing integration of AI into cybercriminal arsenals.
ESET’s researchers, Anton Cherepanov and Peter Strycek, highlighted the challenges posed by AI-assisted ransomware due to the substantial computational resources required for large AI models. Nevertheless, they caution that cybercriminals may still devise methods to circumvent these barriers. The researchers emphasize that it is highly likely that threat actors are actively investigating the utilization of AI technologies, signaling a trend towards more advanced cyber threats.
Despite PromptLock not having been actively used, the actions of cybercriminals are accelerating toward incorporating large language models (LLMs) into their operations. Anthropic has reported observing a group identified as GTG-2002 utilizing Claude Code to automate various cybercrime activities. These activities included target reconnaissance, network infiltration, malware development, data exfiltration, and the crafting of ransom notes. This operation has reportedly affected at least 17 organizations across sectors such as government, healthcare, emergency services, and religious institutions.
Anthropic’s findings illustrate a troubling evolution in AI-assisted cybercrime, wherein AI functions both as a technical consultant and an active participant in orchestrating cyberattacks. This evolution enhances the capability of attackers, allowing them to perform complex operations that would otherwise require significant time and effort if conducted manually.
In terms of tactics and techniques, the MITRE ATT&CK framework provides insights into potential methods employed in these attacks. Initial access techniques, which facilitate the entry into victim networks, along with tactics like credential dumping, data exfiltration, and ransomware deployment, could likely be part of the strategies employed by these threat actors.
