According to researchers Alex Delamotte and Jim Walter, the AkiraBot campaign illustrates how AI-generated content complicates the identification and filtration of spam messages. Unlike previous spam campaigns that employed consistent templates, the AkiraBot messages vary significantly, driven by a rotating selection of domains associated with Akira and ServiceWrap—two SEO service offerings.
AkiraBot utilizes OpenAI’s chat API, specifically the gpt-4o-mini model, to produce customized marketing messages. The bot operates under an instruction set that designates its role as a “helpful assistant” for message generation. Each prompt directs the AI to incorporate specific site names dynamically, resulting in tailored messages that reference the recipient website directly and summarize the services it offers. This personalized approach enhances the likelihood of message delivery, as each communication appears uniquely curated.
SentinelLabs’ analysis indicates that this method of message generation presents significant challenges for spam filtration systems. The researchers noted that since each generated message is distinct, filtering algorithms struggle to identify and block the spam effectively. This contrasts sharply with traditional methods that rely on static message structures, which can easily be recognized and filtered out by existing security measures.
An examination of server log files left by AkiraBot revealed that its tailored messages were successfully delivered to over 80,000 distinct websites between September 2024 and January 2025. Conversely, the bot encountered failure in sending messages to approximately 11,000 other targeted domains, underscoring its effective marketing strategy. OpenAI has acknowledged the research findings, emphasizing that the exploitative use of its chatbots contravenes its terms of service.
