Researchers Expose Vulnerabilities in AI-Driven Calendar Systems

In a recent study, cybersecurity researchers have revealed alarming vulnerabilities in AI systems, particularly those managing calendar invites. By integrating malicious prompts directly into calendar titles, these researchers demonstrated a series of sophisticated attacks that highlight significant gaps in existing security protocols. Though Google’s Wen argues that the default settings for calendar invitations were altered, the researchers assert that they effectively showcased various attack methods using prompts embedded in email subjects and document titles.

The techniques utilized by the researchers involved straightforward English prompts that could be easily crafted by anyone, underlining a troubling accessibility of such attack vectors. According to team member Cohen, “All the techniques are just developed in English, so it’s plain English that we are using.” This suggests that even users without technical expertise could potentially exploit these vulnerabilities.

Significantly, the research included instances where the AI, specifically Google’s Home AI agent named Gemini, was manipulated to control smart-home devices. In one illustrative example, a prompt directed the AI to perform an action triggered by a seemingly innocuous phrase. The attack concept revolved around Gemini being instructed to execute a command to “open the window” conditioned on the user expressing gratitude. The researchers found that when a user asked Gemini for a summary of their calendar events, the AI became receptive to these indirect prompts, activating the command only when specific responses like “thanks” were given.

This method of execution, termed delayed automatic tool invocation, was previously highlighted by independent security researcher Johann Rehberger in early 2024 and has been reiterated this year. Rehberger noted the potential ramifications of such vulnerabilities: “They really showed at large scale, with a lot of impact, how things can go bad, including real implications in the physical world with some of the examples.”

While the focus has been on the manipulation of physical devices, the researchers also developed attack strategies targeting digital interactions. These included a form of “promptware” designed to make the AI carry out malicious actions. For instance, after a user expressed appreciation to Gemini for summarizing calendar events, the AI would echo derogatory messages programmed by the attacker, further emphasizing the potential for psychological manipulation alongside technical vulnerabilities.

Additionally, some of the proposed attack methods could delete calendar events or trigger unwanted digital actions. In one scenario, a user responding negatively to a query from Gemini inadvertently initiated a video call on the Zoom app, showcasing how easily such manipulations could disrupt a user’s workflow.

Understanding the implications of these findings is crucial for business owners concerned about cybersecurity. The attacks demonstrate a clear alignment with multiple tactics outlined in the MITRE ATT&CK framework, specifically involving initial access, execution, and persistence.
