A critical security vulnerability has been identified within the WooCommerce Stripe Gateway plugin for WordPress, permitting potential unauthorized access to sensitive user information. This flaw, designated as CVE-2023-34000, affects versions up to 7.4.0 and was rectified in version 7.4.1, released on May 30, 2023.
The WooCommerce Stripe Gateway plugin, integral for e-commerce operations, facilitates direct acceptance of various payment methods through Stripe’s processing API and is currently active on over 900,000 installations worldwide.
According to Rafie Muhammad, a security researcher at Patchstack, the vulnerability arises from an unauthenticated Insecure Direct Object References (IDOR) issue, allowing a malicious actor to circumvent authorization and access backend resources.
This IDOR vulnerability is rooted in the plugin’s handling of order objects, specifically within its ‘javascript_params’ and ‘payment_fields’ functions, where sufficient access control measures are lacking.
As a result, the vulnerability exposes personally identifiable information (PII) related to any WooCommerce order, including user email addresses, names, and full physical addresses. Muhammad noted, “This vulnerability enables any unauthenticated user to retrieve sensitive details from the WooCommerce order database.”
This discovery follows shortly after significant updates from the WordPress core team, who previously released versions 6.2.1 and 6.2.2 to address multiple security concerns including an unauthenticated directory traversal vulnerability and an unsanctioned cross-site scripting flaw. Notably, three of these security issues were unveiled during a vulnerability assessment conducted by a third-party organization.
