Concerns Rise Over Undetected Coupang Data Breach Lasting Five Months

An alarming data breach has recently emerged involving Coupang, a prominent player in the e-commerce sector, which has left both consumers and analysts in a state of increasing anxiety. As reported this past Saturday, the company confirmed that the personal data of approximately 33.7 million customers had been compromised, marking a significant security incident within the industry.

The data involved includes critical information such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery addresses. Fortunately, Coupang has stated that payment information, credit card numbers, and login credentials remain secure. The breach appears to have originated from unauthorized access to delivery-related personal information via overseas servers, starting on June 24.

Initially detected on November 18, the breach prompted Coupang to notify local authorities within 48 hours. The company’s first statements indicated that around 4,500 accounts had been impacted. However, as the investigation unfolded, it became evident that the scope of the incident was much larger than initially reported. Law enforcement officials have since launched an investigation to ascertain the precise nature and extent of how this breach occurred.

With the breach timeline extending back several months, customers have expressed significant concern about the potential misuse of their compromised data. Social media commentary reflects growing frustration, with users highlighting a lack of clear communication regarding follow-up procedures or compensation from Coupang. One user remarked that the notification felt vague and insufficient, particularly given the risks associated with leaked personal information.

This incident has eclipsed April’s data breach at SK Telecom, which affected 23.2 million users and resulted in hefty fines. As the Coupang case continues to develop, the ramifications for the company—and its customers—may deepen as additional information comes to light.
