SolarWinds, a company notably targeted by Russian cyber espionage operatives, has acquired Squadcast, an incident response automation vendor. This move aims to enhance detection, diagnosis, and resolution of issues, bolstering operational efficiency.

Based in Austin, Texas, SolarWinds announced that the acquisition of San Francisco-based Squadcast is expected to enhance operational response capabilities while reducing mean time to resolution. IT, DevOps, and engineering teams will benefit from a more efficient approach to incident management, cutting through alert noise and automating response workflows to provide better insights into service health.

In a statement, Squadcast emphasized that observability on its own is insufficient. They highlighted common difficulties organizations face in operationalizing data to transform insights into automated, real-time responses, indicating a gap that the acquisition aims to fill.

The cybersecurity incident that brought SolarWinds to the forefront involved the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service infiltrating its corporate network in 2019. This breach allowed the insertion of malicious code into updates for the Orion platform. Currently, SolarWinds is facing a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for allegedly misleading investors regarding this incident.

Founded in 2018 and with a team of 55, Squadcast previously secured a $6 million pre-Series A investment in August 2021 from DNX Ventures. Amiya Adwitiya, who directed investments in Freshworks and Chargebee as a member of Accel’s investment team, has led Squadcast since its inception. However, SolarWinds executives were unavailable for comment regarding the acquisition.

SolarWinds remarked that conventional observability tools, while helpful in providing insights into system performance and health, often lack the automated response mechanisms necessary for effective action. By integrating observability with incident response through this acquisition, the company strives to create a smooth transition from detection to resolution, enabling IT teams to manage system reliability more effectively.

Torsten Volk, a Principal Analyst at the Enterprise Strategy Group, noted the deficiencies many IT environments face—not having a cohesive view of system health while simultaneously being unable to remediate issues efficiently. Despite investments in various monitoring tools, organizations frequently struggle with achieving operational resilience.

Furthermore, traditional monitoring tools often falter in hybrid environments, leading to data silos and delayed incident responses. The integration of Squadcast will allow firms to enhance visibility across both on-premises and cloud systems. AI-driven automation will significantly expedite incident detection and resolution efforts while streamlining monitoring and response processes.

Squadcast affirmed the potential benefits of this partnership, asserting it can eliminate operational silos and accelerate issue resolution by fusing deep observability insights with proactive incident response capabilities. This integration is expected to provide enterprises with a unified solution that can detect performance anomalies in real-time and address issues automatically.

These include a 68% reduction in mean time to resolution and savings of over $500,000 through improved financial efficiency and reduced manual efforts in alert management.

Prior to implementing Squadcast, some organizations experienced tens of thousands of alerts, which have since been reduced to hundreds through its effective deduplication capabilities. This transformation has a direct effect on alleviating alert fatigue and enhancing situational awareness among IT teams.

With advanced AI-powered alert prioritization, SolarWinds now enables IT teams to focus on the most critical alerts while minimizing extraneous noise. The integration of AI in incident response aids in eliminating repetitive manual tasks, allowing teams to concentrate on higher-value initiatives, such as system optimization and long-term resilience strategies.
