A recent alarming trend has emerged on social media platforms, with dealers increasingly exploiting spaces like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) to promote illicit drug sales. A disturbing message from an Instagram account inquired whether I would be interested in a "trip" involving their products, underscoring how pervasive these offers have become. On X, posts discussing psychedelics are frequently followed by automated bot accounts pushing microdoses, as highlighted by Matthew Johnson, a leading researcher in psychedelic studies. Despite efforts to block and report these spammy accounts, many users find their actions ineffective against the onslaught of bot-generated sales pitches.

Reports from organizations focused on drug information, such as Pill Report, indicate that the risks associated with these online deals extend beyond mere solicitation. Individuals have been duped into wiring money to dealers without ever receiving their purchases. One interviewee shared his experience of sending cash for what he believed was cannabis, only to be met with threats from the dealer when he reported the account. This disturbing trend highlights the violent tactics employed by some dealers when confronting dissatisfied customers.

In a separate investigation highlighted by Vice, a journalist was able to connect with a dealer in London in just five minutes, illustrating the alarming accessibility of drug sales to unfettered youth. The dealer commented on the ease with which anyone can enter the market, asserting that children are setting up accounts to sell drugs from the comfort of their homes. Following this, a 15-year-old researcher managed to find an account selling Xanax on Instagram within seconds, further emphasizing the urgency of the issue.

While platforms like Telegram offer a more complicated route for drug transactions, they remain significantly easier to navigate than dark web marketplaces. Francois Lamy, an academic specializing in the sociology of drug use, explains that the barriers to accessing dark-net markets—such as installing Tor and using cryptocurrency—are much higher. Telegram, in contrast, allows users to access drug-related channels simply by typing in the right keywords.

The arrest of Telegram’s founder, Pavel Durov, in August raised further concerns regarding drug trafficking on the platform. Prosecutors cited the widespread nature of these activities as justification for his arrest. In response, Telegram introduced a new user policy designed to mitigate criminal activity, including provisions for handing over user data to law enforcement under certain conditions. The MITRE ATT&CK framework points to tactics such as initial access and persistence that could be used by these adversaries, reflecting the sophisticated means through which illicit activities are maintained online.
