Gartner Highlights How Hype Can Propel Organizations Forward

Despite significant investments in artificial intelligence (AI), many organizations are struggling to realize tangible business benefits, with a rising sentiment that the technology may be overhyped. According to industry experts, fostering an environment that encourages calculated risk-taking, alongside robust cybersecurity investments, is crucial for enhancing organizational resilience and confidence in adopting advanced technologies like AI.
During the Gartner Security and Risk Management Summit in Mumbai, analysts Deepti Gopal and Dennis Xu outlined the vital role Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) can play in successfully integrating AI into business operations. The keynote discussion centered on the nature of hype—the phenomenon influencing investment and decision-making in technology sectors, particularly regarding AI and cybersecurity.
“While excessive hype can lead to overinvestment in unproven technologies or cause hesitance in risk management teams, it frequently points to underlying trends that organizations should address,” Xu stated. This sentiment reflects the broader industry trend where 69% of tech leaders plan to prioritize cybersecurity and technology risk management over the coming year, driven by fears surrounding their exposure to cyber threats.
Recent reports, including Gartner’s 2024 Hype Cycle for Artificial Intelligence, indicate that AI has moved past the peak of inflated expectations. This framework illustrates the varying phases that emerging technologies undergo in terms of adoption and understanding. Analysts noted that cybersecurity concerns remain the primary barrier preventing organizations from fully embracing cutting-edge technologies like AI.
As spending projections for information security rise significantly in 2025—encompassing sectors like network security, security services, and software—organizations are compelled to balance their investments across emerging technologies. Gartner has indicated that an increasing percentage of CEOs recognize the transformative potential of AI, leading to a notable rise in AI-related funding among tech leaders this year.
Building Cyber Resilience Amidst the Hype
Gopal emphasized the necessity for CISOs to leverage hype as a means to enhance cybersecurity leadership, ensuring it serves organizational goals rather than hindering decision-making. “Cybersecurity should facilitate business operations by reducing friction, focusing on resilient frameworks that address threats and recovery effectively,” she noted.
Resilience, once an abstract notion, has become more concrete under frameworks like DORA, which aligns people, processes, and technology with essential business outcomes. Gopal pointed out the disconnect that often exists, where cybersecurity is considered merely a regulatory compliance task instead of being integrated into the overall business strategy, leading to overlooked opportunities in risk management.
Navigating Intelligent Risk-Taking
According to Gartner analysts, the role of CISOs is becoming increasingly critical for balancing the potential rewards of innovation against inherent risks. They must cultivate a culture of intelligent risk-taking, empowering teams to make informed decisions amid constant regulatory and budgetary pressures. Gopal highlighted the importance of adopting a focused approach that prioritizes essential actions for ongoing business continuity.
As organizations navigate these complexities, the need for outcome-driven metrics (ODMs) becomes apparent. ODMs help communicate effective protection levels and align business objectives with cybersecurity strategies. These metrics serve as a bridge between technical protection measures and broader business outcomes, enabling organizations to harness cybersecurity investments effectively.
Promoting AI Literacy to Navigate Challenges
The rapid evolution of AI requires a foundational understanding among business leaders. Gartner suggests that cultivating AI literacy through beginner-focused training can clarify expectations and reduce misconceptions about AI’s capacities. This awareness is particularly crucial as leaders grapple with societal demands and technological advancements.
Furthermore, the cybersecurity sector grapples with ongoing talent shortages and high rates of burnout, aggravated by the relentless pace of change. To counter these challenges, business leaders must embrace change management strategies and foster a learning culture that equips teams to respond effectively to the evolving landscape of cybersecurity.
